I drew this at Port Orleans Riverside Resort on Veteran's Day. Hopefully you recognize the fella in the picture as John Wayne in one of his less popular roles as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War. I say it was less popular because the film was made smack dab in the middle of all the Vietnam War protests and the film was very pro-military and was sympathetic to the soldiers who fought the war. That's surely a recipe for a film never to be nominated for an Academy Award, let alone favorable criticism from Hollywood.

"The Bully"

This was a quick doodle I did on the corner of scrap paper at Animal Kingdom. There seemed to be a lot of them made during the 50's and 60's. There is one western that seems to be more realistic than all the rest when it comes to what it might be like living in those days- Gunsmoke. Gunsmoke seemed to make you feel what it would be like to actually be there in the hot, uncomfortable, untamed West. All the other westerns (Have Gun Will Travel, Maverick, Wyatt Earp, The Rifleman, Bonanza, and especially the Wild Wild West) seemed to portray everyone as always being neatly groomed, never sweaty, and neatly dressed. Whereas Gunsmoke (especially the later episodes) always had people with sweaty brows, dusty clothes, and tossled hair. I mean let's face it- they didn't have air conditioning back then, they wore three layers of clothes and had to fetch water when ever they wanted to wash anything. Gunsmoke was never my favorite western for several reasons. I guess the grime factor was one of them.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.jimmyscartoons.com/2009/09/true-tv-western.html' title='A True T.V. I guess that all depends on what kind of kids you have. I don't have any kids, but I'm kind of under the impression that you get out of them what you put into them. If you shout at them all the time and abandon them to their own devices, chances are their going to turn into little terrors. If you show them love AND discipline, manage quality time with them, and are a good example (yeah, I guess that means parental responsibility; the answers are in the Bible, you know, life's manual), than they're going to turn out okay. (Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Ephesian 6:4 "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.")

Illustration for V.B.S.

This year for Vacation Bible School, my church's theme was "The Great Escape". No, it doesn't have anything to do with the Steve McQueen movie ;). It's referring to the verse I Thessalonians 5:9 "For God has not appointed us unto wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ." Some people think that God (if they believe in God at all) is some big cosmic ogre that likes sending people to hell. Nothing could be further from the truth. Remember that mankind was the first ones to stray from God's perfect plan in the Garden of Eden. God has made a way to escape the punishment that is to come. A life-line, if you will. Like the verse says it's through believing that Jesus Christ paid that penalty for us by being nailed to a cross and taking our punishment upon Himself. Yeah, it's just that simple- grab that lifeline or don't grab that lifeline. The choice is yours (but are you willing to take that risk?). The illustration itself is kind of an attention grabber that is being printed onto the invites. They wanted kind of an adventurous, Indiana Jones feel.

A Painting From Long Ago

This is a painting that I did between my first and second year in grad school. It may be somewhat abstract, but it is of Jesus (as a young boy) and his mother Mary. The inspiration for this piece was thinking about what Jesus was like as a young boy (the Bible doesn't say a whole lot about Him as a child). To think that the same arms that Jesus stretched out to embrace his mother out of love were the same ones that would be stretched out to be crucified for us (out of love) is a very sobering thought. It was done in oils and took A LONG TIME to complete. Completing this one was kind of an emotional rollercoaster and a great learning experience. If you have never read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) before, now that were in the Christmas season, now would be a great time! It will definitley deepen your realization as to what Christmas is all about and WHY and HOW Jesus was born.

Head Studies

About a year ago when I was still in school, some fellow classmates of mine would go to a guy's house and paint head studies of various people. We would invite the model to sit under warm lights for two hours while we would listen to music and enjoy ourselves while we painted. (sigh) Those were some good times. I have always enjoyed the art of portraiture, but I always had the feeling that I didn't take it as seriously as I should have. A lot of times I would get hasty and impatient and instead of being methodical, I would become somewhat sloppy. Anyway, these are a few people that I painted and even though I wouldn't call these gallery pieces, I kind of like some things about them (there are of course many things that I could point out that are wrong with the paintings- I'm never really truly satisfied with my work). I thought I would share these to show that you don't have to know everything there is to know about portrait painting to give it a try. It is very good practice and will only improve the skills that you want to build upon. If you have trouble finding a model, just ask a family member or even find a good picture (emphasis on GOOD). If your going to paint from a picture make sure it has enough contrast to create a sense of shape to the face. Studio photos (like Sears) will usually have so much fill light that it will be difficult to get any sense of dimension. Also, look at and learn from the masters- people like John Singer Sargent, Joe Bowler, John Howard Sanden, and Everett Raymond Kinstler are great people to learn from.

Some Artwork From The Past

Here are some pictures that I painted five years ago for a mission board that I interned at for a short while. I like using watercolors, but the benefit of using acrylics is the ability to build up color-values (a term coined by the great portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler) using washes.
Once the washes have dried, its then possible to go in with more opaque color. I thought the guy from Mexico kind of looks a little like Charles Bronson. All of these people were painted from photographs that were taken at their countries. Concerning the lettering, I think that the Central American piece could have used some form of line or border around the lettering to help increase readability. Also, the background for the Papua New Guinea painting could have had a
little more detail added to it. Somehow it seems somewhat bland- or maybe its that the colors clash- I don't know. Anyway, I know their not caricatures, but I just thought I would share something a little different. Take care all and God bless!
